Written & Compiled by; Assoutudeen Abu Mubāshīr

Sihr literally means hidden or secret, because the practitioners of sihr deal with things in secret which enable them to perform illusions which confuse the people and deceive their eyes. It also enables them to cause harm or steal their money, etc, in a secretive manner so that in most cases nobody realizes what is happening.

It is sometimes defined as deception by showing something to an audience, which is contrary to reality.

According to sharee’ah, the meaning of sihr is what the magicians do that deludes and confuses people, in a manner that the one who is watching thinks that it is real when in fact it is not. It also involves seeking the help of demons(Evil Jinns) to perform something harmful against another human being.

Sihr may also involve things that the magician does like tying knots on which he blows. It may also involve other things which they manage to do through the shayaateen (devils), so they do things that may affect a man’s reasoning or make him sick; they may even cause division between a man and his spouse, making the latter to appear ugly to the former and vice versa; or sowing the seed of discord in a peaceful home.

Refutation of Sihr
An appropriate Islamic creed concerning sihr should be that Magic and any harm that results therefrom is subject to the prior decree and will of Allah, for our Lord cannot be overwhelmed and nothing can happen in His Dominion against His Will, hence the word of His Majesty:

وَمَا هُم بِضَارِّينَ بِهِ مِنْ أَحَدٍ إِلَّا بِإِذْنِ اللَّهِ

but they( the magician with their magic) could not thus harm anyone except by Allaah’s Leave”
[al-Baqarah 2:102]

That is, this magic and any harm that results therefrom is subject to the prior decree and will of Allaah, for our Lord cannot be overwhelmed and nothing can happen in His Dominion against His Will. Nothing happens in this world or in the hereafter except by His prior decree and His great wisdom, as He wills.

So some people may be tested by sihr, and others may be tested by sickness, or by being killed…etc. Allaah is All-Wise in all that He wills and decrees, and in all that He prescribes for His slaves.

Therefore, a believer should know He(Allaah) has already decreed that So and so will do sihr, and that So and so will be affected by sihr, just as He already knows and has already decreed that So and so will be killed, or afflicted with a certain sickness, or will die in a certain land, and will receive such and such provision, or will be rich or poor. All of that happens by the will and decree of Allaah, as He says

Surah Al-Qamar, Verse 49:
إِنَّا كُلَّ شَيْءٍ خَلَقْنَاهُ بِقَدَرٍ

Verily, We have created all things with Qadar (Divine Preordainments of all things before their creation, as written in the Book of Decrees Al-Lauh Al-Mahfuz).

Surah Al-Hadid, Verse 22:

No calamity befalls on the earth or in yourselves but is inscribed in the Book of Decrees (Al-Lauh Al-Mahfuz), before We bring it into existence. Verily, that is easy for Allah.

The evils that come at the hands of the magicians or others do not happen because our Lord is ignorant, for He knows all things and nothing at all is hidden from Him, as He says:

لِتَعْلَمُوا أَنَّ اللَّهَ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ وَأَنَّ اللَّهَ قَدْ أَحَاطَ بِكُلِّ شَيْءٍ عِلْمًا

“that you may know that Allaah has power over all things, and that Allâh surrounds all things in (His) Knowledge”[al-Talaaq 65:12]

So Allaah knows all things, and nothing happens in His Dominion that He does not will, but He has perfect wisdom and good aims in whatever He decrees should happen to people of honour or humiliation, losing or gaining power, sickness or health, magic and other things.

Summarily, everything that happens to people happens by the will of Allaah and in accordance with His prior decree.

  1. Sihr of Separation (سحر الافتراق)
It is a type of sihr that aim to separate or stir up hatred between two friends or partners. This type of sihr may be done with a view of separating the target victim from his mother, father, brother, friend, business partner or his (potential) spouse.

That of the spouse is the most dangerous and prevalent type. Concerning this type of sihr, Allah says:

ْ فَيَتَعَلَّمُونَ مِنْهُمَا مَا يُفَرِّقُونَ بِهِ بَيْنَ الْمَرْءِ وَزَوْجِهِ

From them they learned that (magic) by which they might cause a separation between a man and his wife; (2:102)

📚 Jabir reported that Prophet said: “Iblis would lay his throne on water and would send his brigade of demons. The lowest among them in rank is the one who is most notorious in stirring up fitna. One of the demons would, after a mission, come and say to Iblis, ‘I have done so and so.’ Iblis would reply, ‘You have not done anything.’ Another one would come and say: ‘I have not left such and such person until I separated him from his wife.’ Iblis would come closer to his demon and say, ‘How good you are.” (Muslim in An-Nawawi : 17/157)

Symptoms of Sihr of Separation
1⃣A sudden change in attitude from love to hate.

2⃣A great deal of suspicion is aroused between the two people concerned.

3⃣No form of excuses is accepted by either party, even if one of them is wrong.

4⃣Exaggerating the causes of disputes between two people, even though they may be trivial.

5⃣ Changing the mental image that a woman may have of her husband, or changing the mental image that a man may have of his wife; so that the man would see his wife in an ugly way, even though she is beautiful.
In reality, it is the demon who is entrusted with the task of performing this type of sihr, is the one who would appear to the husband in her image, but in an ugly way. By the same token, the woman would see her husband in a horrible way.

6⃣ The person affected by sihr hates anything the other party does.

7️⃣ The person affected by sihr hates the place in which the other party stays. For instance, a husband may be in good mood when he is outdoors, but when he returns home, he feels quiet depressed.

According to Al-Hafidh Ibn Kathir, the cause of separation between two spouses through this type of sihr is that each of them appears to the other as an ugly or ill- mannered. (Tafsir lbn Kathir: 1/144)

  1. Sihr of False Appearance of Object (سحر التخييل)
    Allah (‘Azza wa Jalla) says:
    Surah Taha, Verse 65:
    قَالُوا يَا مُوسَىٰ إِمَّا أَن تُلْقِيَ وَإِمَّا أَن نَّكُونَ أَوَّلَ مَنْ أَلْقَىٰ

They said: O Musa! will you cast, or shall we be the first who cast down?

He said: Nay! cast down. then lo! their cords and their rods– it was imaged to him on account of their magic as if they were running

فَأَوْجَسَ فِي نَفْسِهِ خِيفَةً مُّوسَىٰ
So Musa conceived in his mind a fear
قُلْنَا لَا تَخَفْ إِنَّكَ أَنتَ الْأَعْلَىٰ
We said: Fear not, surely you shall be the uppermost

And cast down what is in your right hand; it shall devour what they have wrought; they have wrought only the plan of a magician, and the magician shall not be successful wheresoever he may come from.

Symptoms of Sihr Takhyeel
1⃣ A fixed object would appear to be mobile, while a mobile object would appear to be fixed for the viewer.

2⃣ A small object would appear large, while a large object would appear small for the viewer.

3⃣ The false appearance of objects: Under the effect of the magic of Pharaoh’s sorcerers, ropes and rods appeared to viewers as real snakes.

  1. SIHR OF LOVE (سحر المحبة/التولة)
    The Prophet said: ” Ar-ruqa, at-tama’im and at-tiwala are acts of polytheism .” {Transmitted by Imam Ahmad (1/381), Abu Dawud (3883), Ibn Majja (3530) and Al-Hakim (4/418)}

According to Ibn Al-Athir, at-tiwala is a type of sihr which makes a man to love his wife. The reason why this type of sihr is classed by the Prophet as an act of polytheism is because those who have it done for them believe that it has an effect and does the opposite of what Allah (‘Azza wa Jalla) has prescribed. (An-Nihaya: 1/200)
Ar-ruqa involves seeking the assistance of Jinn and devils, which is an act of polytheism.

Symptoms of Sihr of Love
1⃣ Excessive love and passion.

2⃣ Extreme desire to have sexual intercourse.

3⃣ Impatience of remaining without having sexual intercourse.

4⃣ Extreme lust at the sight of one’s wife.

5⃣ Blind obedience to one’s wife

Adverse Effects of Sihr of Love
1⃣ Sometimes a man falls ill as a result of this sihr. The sickness could last for a number of years.

2⃣ Sometimes the sihr backfires, and the man would hate his wife. This is due to a lack of knowledge the practice of sihr.

3⃣ Sometimes, a woman asks the saahir to prepare a double-effect sihr which makes her husband love her alone and hate all other women.
This results in the man’s hating his mother, sisters, maternal aunts, paternal aunts and all female kinship.

4⃣ Sometimes, the double-effect sihr backfires, and the man ends up by hating all women, even his wife.

There have been similar cases in which a man hated his wife and eventually divorced her. The woman went back to the sorcerer to cancel the sihr, only to find that the saahir had died.

Causes of Sihr of Love
1⃣ Marital squabbles

2⃣ The woman runs after her husband’s wealth (fortune hunter), especially if he is rich.

3⃣ The woman suspects that her husband is going to marry another woman -although this is lawful under Islamic Law- and there is no harm in it. It’s wrong for her to believe that if her husband wants to marry another woman, it means that he does not love her anymore. This is a gross mistake because there are several factors which cause a man to marry up to four women, despite his love for the first wife.

There is, for instance, his desire to have many children, his inability to stay without sexual intercourse during his wife’s menstruation, during her postnatal bleeding, or his intention to establish a relationship with a certain family.

1⃣ Make yourself look very beautiful and attractive to your husband, don’t let him come across any ugly feature or unpleasant smell in you.

2⃣ Giving him a warm smile every time. 😊

3⃣ Talking to him lovingly, and pleasantly.

4⃣ Keeping good company with him.

5⃣ Safeguard his wealth.

6⃣ Taking good care of your children.

7⃣ Keeping the house clean and tidy.

8⃣ Obeying him in all matters, except a matter in which he obliges you to disobey Allah.

There is a stark contradiction in our society today, concerning these matters. A classical example is, when a woman is invited to any social event, she takes special care to ensure that she looks her best by wearing her best outfit and compliments it with her best makeup and jewellery. When she returns home, she removes all her party clothes and jewellery. The poor husband, who has bought that jewellery and dress is deprived of the enjoyment of seeing her wearing them. If she were considerate and smart, she would realize that her husband is the one who deserves to see her in such a beautiful appearance. Therefore, when the husband goes to work, try to finish the housework, wash yourself, make yourself beautiful and attractive, and wait for him.

When he returns home let him see a beautiful woman before him, and let him find food ready in a tidy home.
His love for you will increase and he will feel very much more attached to you. This is the lawful form of attraction, and is very rewarding, especially if your intention in beautifying yourself is to obey Allah and help your husband abstain from looking at other women.

  1. Sihr of Lethargy (سحر الخمول)

A saahir would send a Jinn to the targeted person, instructing him to settle in his brain and make him introverted and lonely. The Jinn would do his best to carry out the mission, and the symptoms of this sihr would appear, according to the strength and weakness of the Jinn entrusted with the task.

1⃣ Love of seclusion.

2⃣ Absolute introversion.

3⃣ Constant silence.

4⃣ Anti-social behavior.

5⃣ Absentmindedness.

6⃣ Frequent headaches.

7⃣ Quietness and constant lethargy.

Sihr is undoubtedly a grave sin in Islam so much so that saahir — practitioner of sihr, are regarded as kaafir(disbeliever).

For such a grave sin, there is a stipulated punishment. It is not permissible in any manner to annul a punishment prescribed by the sharee’ah. Even worse and more abhorrent than that, is approving of the haraam deed and allowing the practitioner of sihr to work his magic in return for paying taxes.

The Messenger of Allaah said, “He is not of us, the one who (looks for) evil omens, or the one on whose behalf they are sought (omens are signs, information, from the unseen used against people), or the one who practices soothsaying, or the one on whose behalf it is practiced; or the one who practices sorcery, or the one for whom sorcery is done.” (At-Tabaraanee)

The Prophet (saws) commanded: “Kill every sorcerer, for this is the punishment ordained by Allah.”

Sihr is one of the worst sins a person can commit on the same level with Kufr, leaving Islam, because Allah says many times in the Quran that it is Kufr.

Imam Ahmad said, “Capital punishment for the sorcerer has been authentically reported from three companions of the Prophet. It is reported from Umar that he wrote, “Kill every sorcerer and sorceress.” Bujaalah (a sub-narrator of the hadith) said, “Then we killed three sorceresses.”

It is also authentically reported from Hafsah (the Prophet’s wife) that she ordered a maid of hers to be killed because she did sorcery on her.

Ibn Kathir stated: “The death penalty has another antecedent in the story of Hafsa (the wife of the prophet), Umm al-Mu’minin. One of her female
servants performed Sihr on her, so she ordered that her servant be killed, and the killing was carried out”

According to Imam Ahmad, three companions of Rasulullah (saws) confirmed that the punishment for a Saahir is the death penalty.” (Tafsir Ibn Kathir, 1/144)

It is authentically reported that the great companion of the Prophet (peace be upon him) Jundub ibn `Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) saw a magician deceive people by cutting his head off and returning it to it’s place again (a street magician performing an illusion). Upon that, Jundub (may Allah be pleased with him) drew near to the magician without his notice and killed him and said to him, “Then, return your head if you are truthful.”

According to Ibn Qudamah, the punishment for practicing Sihr was also the death sentence and this is the opinion reported by the companions of the prophet (saws), among others, of Umar (ra), Uthman Ibn Affan (ra), Ibn Umar (ra), Hafsa (ra), Jundub Ibn Abdullah (ra), Jundub Ibn Ka’b (ra), Qays Ibn Sa’d (ra) and Umar Ibn Abdu’l-Aziz, it is also the view of Abu Hanifa and Malik.

Ibn Hajar reported that according to Imam Malik, the punishment for practicing Sihr is similar to that applicable to az-Zindiq (a person who does not believe in the hereafter or who openly declares his faith, but conceals his Kufr). His repentance should not be accepted, and he must be killed if it is confirmed that he is really a Saahir. This is also the view of Imam Ahmad.

In conclusion, according to the aforementioned views, the majority of scholars are of the opinion that the Saahir should be killed.

  1. Do Not Practice Nushrah (النشرة)
Nushrah means removing sihr from a person who has been affected by it by using more sihr. Whoever is affected by sihr should not treat it with sihr, because evil cannot be removed by evil, and kufr cannot be removed by kufr. Evil is removed by good.

Hence when the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) was asked about al-nushrah
(treating sihr with sihr), he said: “This is the work of the Shaytaan.”

  1. Treat sihr with recitation of the Qur’aan
The greatest soorah in the Qur’aan, which is al-Faatihah, should be recited over the person who has been affected with sihr. This should be repeated several times. If it is recited by a believing, righteous person who knows that everything is subject to the will and decree of Allaah, that Allaah is in control of all things, that when He says to a thing ‘Be!’ it is, if the recitation is based on faith, taqwa and sincerity, and is repeated several times, then the sihr may be removed and the person may recover by Allaah’s Leave.

Some of the Sahaabah (may Allaah be pleased with them) passed by some Bedouins whose shaykh, i.e., their leader, had been bitten. They had done everything they could but he had not gotten any better. They said to one of the Sahaabah, “Is there any raaqi (one who performs ruqyah) among you?” They said, “Yes.” So one of them recited Soorat al-Faatihah over him, and he immediately got up full of energy as if nothing had happened; Allaah healed him of the ill-effects of that snakebite.

  1. Performing ruqyah for one affected by sihr
It is prescribed to perform ruqyah for the one who has been bitten or stung, and the one who has been affected by sihr, and the one who is sick by reciting good du’aa’s, even if they were not transmitted from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), so long as they do not contain anything that is haraam, because of the general meaning of the hadeeth of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him): “There is nothing wrong with
ruqyah so long as it does not involve shirk .”

The prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) performed ruqyah and had it performed for him. There is a lot of good in ruqyah, and a great deal of benefit in it. Al-Faatihah , Aayat al-Kursiy , “Qul Huwa Allaahu Ahad”, al-Mi’wadhatayn (Soorah An Nas and Al Falaq) and other aayahs may be recited over the person who has been affected by sihr, as well as good du’aa’s narrated in the ahaadeeth from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him).

  1. Believing in Allah’s decree
The patient affected by sihr does not necessarily recover, because not every sick person does recover. Allaah may decree that he should recover, or He may not decree that, as a test and a trial, or for other reasons which are known to Allaah. When the appointed time of death comes, no treatment will be of any avail, because Allaah says:

Surah Al-Munafiqoon, Verse 11:

وَلَن يُؤَخِّرَ اللَّهُ نَفْسًا إِذَا جَاءَ أَجَلُهَا وَاللَّهُ خَبِيرٌ بِمَا تَعْمَلُونَ

And Allah grants respite to none when his appointed time (death) comes. And Allah is All-Aware of what you do.

If however the victim is healed, all well and good. The bottom line is to believe that whatever the outcome is, it has been decreed by Allah and should be accepted in good faith.

Sihr is haraam (unlawful) and kufr (disbelief), because Allaah has stated that the magician (witch, sorcerer) will have no share in the Hereafter and this ruling is found emphatically in a single verse (amongst others). Allaah, the Most High, said, in the verse in Surah al-Baqarah regarding Sulaymaan (alayhis salaam), the Angels Harut and Marut and Babylon (Baabil):

ﻭَﻣَﺎ ﻛَﻔَﺮَ ﺳُﻠَﻴْﻤَﺎﻥُ ﻭَﻟَﻜِﻦَّ ﺍﻟﺸَّﻴَﺎﻃِﻴﻦَ ﻛَﻔَﺮُﻭﺍ

And Sulayman did not disbelieve but the devils disbelieved…

ﺇِﻧَّﻤَﺎ ﻧَﺤْﻦُ ﻓِﺘْﻨَﺔٌ ﻓَﻼ ﺗَﻜْﻔُﺮْ

We (the two Angels, Harut and Marut) are a tribulation so do not disbelieve ..

ﻭَﻟَﻘَﺪْ ﻋَﻠِﻤُﻮﺍ ﻟَﻤَﻦِ ﺍﺷْﺘَﺮَﺍﻩُ ﻣَﺎ ﻟَﻪُ ﻓِﻲ ﺍﻵﺧِﺮَﺓِ
ﻣِﻦْ ﺧَﻼﻕٍ

And they knew that whoever purchased of it (magic), that he would have no share of the Hereafter. (al-Baqarah 2:102)

This is because magic is done with the assistance of the Shayaateen (devils, demons), and it does not takes place except through disbelief (kufr),
associating partners with Allah (shirk), worship of the devils and worship of the stars.

In the hadeeth narrated by al-Bukhari, Muslim, an-Nasaa’ee and Abu Dawud:

ﻋﻦ ﺃﺑﻲ ﻫﺮﻳﺮﺓ ﺃﻥ ﺭﺳﻮﻝ ﺍﻟﻠﻪ ﺻﻠﻰ ﺍﻟﻠﻪ ﻋﻠﻴﻪ
ﻭﺳﻠﻢ ﻗﺎﻝ : ﺍﺟﺘﻨﺒﻮﺍ ﺍﻟﺴﺒﻊ ﺍﻟﻤﻮﺑﻘﺎﺕ. ﻗﺎﻟﻮﺍ : ﻳﺎ
ﺭﺳﻮﻝ ﺍﻟﻠﻪ ﻭﻣﺎ ﻫﻦ؟ ﻗﺎﻝ : ﺍﻟﺸﺮﻙ ﺑﺎﻟﻠﻪ، ﻭﺍﻟﺴﺤﺮ،
ﻭﻗﺘﻞ ﺍﻟﻨﻔﺲ ﺍﻟﺘﻲ ﺣﺮﻡ ﺍﻟﻠﻪ ﻗﺘﻠﻬﺎ ﺇﻻ ﺑﺎﻟﺤﻖ،
ﻭﺃﻛﻞ ﺍﻟﺮﺑﺎ، ﻭﺃﻛﻞ ﻣﺎﻝ ﺍﻟﻴﺘﻴﻢ، ﻭﺍﻟﺘﻮﻟﻲ ﻳﻮﻡ
ﺍﻟﺰﺣﻒ، ﻭﻗﺬﻑ ﺍﻟﻤﺤﺼﻨﺎﺕ ﺍﻟﻐﺎﻓﻼﺕ ﺍﻟﻤﺆﻣﻨﺎﺕ

From Abu Hurairah that the Messenger of Allaah (sallallaahu alayhi wasallam) said: “Avoid the seven destroyers”. They (the Companions) said, “O Messenger of Allaah, what are they?”. Hemsaid: “Shirk (associating partners) with Allaah (in worship), magic, killing a soul whose killing Allaah has made unlawful without due right, consuming interest (usury), consuming the wealth of an orphan, fleeing from the battlefield, and accusing the believing, unaware, protected (married) women.”

In this hadeeth, the Messenger (alayhis salaam) put magic next to shirk (associating partners with Allaah in worship), since magic requires the assistance of the devils and this only takes place through obeying and worshiping them.

And Allah knows best!

Barakallahufihi, May Allah increase you in knowledge and piety. It is just unfortunate that we currently live in a world where shir is performed openly and with pride. May Allah protect us from the evil of shaytanm Amin
